We used the P+S Technik PS-Cam X35 in very cold conditions and in 110 degree heat and humidity. It never missed a beat. The footage is gorgeous. It shoots full HD, full color, from 1 to 450 fps. For regular speeds of 24-60 fps, you record directly from the HD-SDI output.

With the PS-Cam X35, we found that 128 fps was a good speed for basic shots. At 220 fps, things looked really beautiful. At 450 fps, it took on a different dimension. We saw things people don't normally get to see. The image looked clean, without distractions—just sand and sky and horse covering the entire frame. You see every muscle of the horse—it's like art.

This beast is capable of anything from 1 to 450 frames per second, and it's meant to function both as your A-camera as well as your high speed camera. The idea being that you don't need to bring an extra camera out for the high speed stuff. If your A-camera can do 450 frames per second you're pretty well covered.

The PS-Cam X35 name is good. It's a workhorse camera, a digital take on the workhorse Arriflex 435 camera. The idea is that you can go out with one small camera that shoots both sync-sound and motion effects from speeds of 1-450 fps: one camera for dialog, slow and fast motion, time lapse, and speed ramps.

The PS-Cam X35 is really, really cool. For someone like me with a strong visual effects/digital post background that is EXACTLY the set of features we need in a camera. The combination of sync-sound capability coupled with high speed make it a perfect solution for shooting visual effects elements/plates in the current market. Also, the global shutter will be of great interest to the VFX community since the 'jello effect' inherent in current CMOS sensors makes motion tracking/3D match moving very difficult. I believe the camera is becoming a 'standard issue' piece of gear for visual effects work.
